The continent of Europe

Europe is a part of the largest continent in the world. Its area accounts for 10,180,000 sq km. Together with Asia (44,580,000 sq km), Europe forms the continent of Eurasia.

  • The population of Europe is approximately 992 million people or about 9% of the total Earth’s population. There is high population growth in Europe: 741 million people in 2016 in contrast with 992 million people in 2017;
  • The continent has 7 main time zones, from UTC+01:00 to UTC+05:00;
  • Europe’s total area is 10,180,000 sq km;
  • Europe consists of 53 countries. There are such well-known countries among them as Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Ireland, Russia, Ukraine and others;
  • In addition to Europe, there are also 6 continents in the world: AfricaAntarcticaAsiaNorth AmericaAustraliaSouth America.

The continent is famous for the great cultural diversity while occupying comparatively small area.

Europe covers the western part of the large continent of Eurasia. The European part has a predominantly lowland landscape. Mountainous regions occupy about 17% of the total European territory. In general, the climate in Europe is quite uniform in comparison with Asia.

The larger part of Europehas a temperate climate. Oceanic climate prevails in the western part near the coast, and the eastern part of the mainland has a continental climate, with a range of temperatures from +15°C to +40°C. The southern part of Europe has a Mediterranean climate with temperatures from -15°C to +30°C.
